We spent four excellent days in San Diego visiting B's excellent family. We were too busy having fun to stop and write about it, so here is a bullet-point chronological highlight reel:
- Dropped our stuff off at B's parents' condo and made a beeline for the traditional fish taco place
- Hit up Trader Joe's as soon as possible the next morning, got so many chocolate things
- Long walk around Mission Bay, where we tested out B's new binoculars on a flock of Black Skimmers
- Ate traditional sandwiches at the bait shop, where we were joined by aunt K and uncle G, visiting form South Carolina
- Spotted a sea lion (or seal?) swimming around the marina
- A pod of dolphins swam right into the bay, giving us a great view through the binocs and then from atop a bridge as they swam back out to sea
- Got tasty gelatto (B's was a hot pink dragon fruit + lemon sorbet) and walked back along the Mission Beach boardwalk
- Cancelled our hotel because we were cozy staying with the Frasiers
- Had dinner at K & G's, where we watched people and hummingbirds from the balcony at sunset
- Checked out the murals at Chicano Park the next day
- Visited the Bread & Salt art gallery
- Our planned taco destination was closed due to health code violations, so we drove back up to La Jolla to our favourite spot, the Taco Stand (the smoky carne / pollo asadas were worth the trip)
- R & R dropped us off early to walk back along the beach, where B stuck her feet in the chilly ocean
- K & G came over for sushi dinner and more nice visits
- Picked up our rental car on Friday and drove to a sandwich place, a bookstore, and An's Dry Cleaning, which is actually an ice cream shop serving very good ice cream (highlights were honey + goat cheese / rice + cinnamon)
- Drove out to B's sister's place in the hills outside of town, where we spent the afternoon wandering the property, sampling the citrus grove, and chatting with K & T over tea in the kitchen
- R & R showed up in the evening with a tasty indian food dinner
- The four Frasiers chatted and laughed for hours in front of a fire
- Stayed over at K's very comfy house and were treated to waffles and smoothies in the morning
- Set out north towards the Sierra Nevada Mountains
- Didn't see any of the notorious LA fires on the way
- Stopped for burgers from In & Out, grabbed more groceries from TJ's and tire chains from Walmart
- Passed through endless orange groves north of Bakersfield
- Drove up an increasingly narrow and winding road into the foothills of the Sierra Nevadas as the sun went down
- Arrived at an extremely cozy cabin just outside of Sequoia / Kings Canyon National Park
