toyama

we got apples and baby snow peas for breakfast at the morning market in Takayama, then hung out in our tatami room for a bit before we caught the local train to Toyama. it seems as though we got caught up in a tourist migration route: everyone in line was a foreigner heading to Kanazawa. we met a nice lady from Phuket, a party guy from Munich, and a blowhard from Chicago, and we also overheard some German and Italian speakers too.

luckily, we seemed to be the only people stopping in Toyama, a city on the coast (although we still haven't seen the ocean). we passed by the Toyama Castle, then visited the Glass Art Museum for both its art and architecture; the building is remarkable and there was a whole collection of commissioned works by Chihuly.

we're still on the tail end of a heat wave, so we got fancy ice cream (and stared at by the locals) before heading back to the train station to catch the Shinkansen to Kanazawa, where we're staying for two nights. dinner was conveyor-belt sushi, and it was weird and scary and fun and delicious.
