we left Montreal in the wee hours of Monday morning. our second flight from Minneapolis took us over Alaska and the Bering Strait, and the sun never went down, and at some point we passed into tomorrow.
the flights were okay. they gave us these nice free blue blankets, plus surprisingly good food and a deluxe triple caramel Magnum ice cream bar (which ended in tragedy when I got chocolate on my blanket).
we got into Tokyo yesterday afternoon local time (negative 2.76 days ago EST, or something). as we looked around for where to buy tickets for the monorail to downtown, we were suddenly struck by the fact that we still know barely any Japanese. but we sorted it out and got some tickets, and we've already had a few people speak English to us, so we should be fine.
we're staying in a room the size of a modest closet in a quiet area north of downtown. we walked around a lot yesterday and saw things and ate good food. Japan is excellent so far.
