National Parks Road Trip 11: Up in the Clouds

The parking lot at the top of Logan Pass is notoriously busy, so we set alarms and were once again on the road just before sunup. L drove the long way around to avoid a rough road, and we both watched the side of the road carefully for deer. (There were some, but they wisely avoided crossing in front of us.)

Not far from the park, we encountered some of the thickest fog we'd ever seen, foreshadowing the day ahead. There was a solid cloud just sitting right on top of Logan Pass - sometimes you could only see about twenty feet ahead of you. Nonetheless, we bravely ventured out onto the path to Hidden Lake, which starts with a boardwalk that climbs up through a meadow and eventually reaches what we are told is a beautiful view of the lake, possibly with mountain goats and bears lurking somewhere nearby.

We next tried the Highline Trail leading out the other end of the parking lot, which everyone agrees is a must-see, with spectacular views of the mountains below. We made it just a few hundred meters before deciding that we mustn't necessarily see it if all we were seeing was fog.

It was clear just below the pass, so we parked at Siyeh Creek and started up the trail, following a pretty creek running along angled clefts in the rock. We made it a steep 4 km up towards Siyeh Pass, where we saw two big glaciers hiding near the tops of two cliffs. On the way down, we spotted a small bunny that we think was a snowshoe hare and stopped for a pleasant chat with two retired volunteer park rangers, talking parks, moose, and the best lightweight canoes.

B took a turn driving home, so L got to enjoy the insane views on the way down. We stopped at a little nature trail to a point by the lake with a 360-degree view of the valley, saw a juvenile bald eagle, and got a new magnet from the gift shop. For dinner, we got very good pizza from a little food truck with a wood-fire oven, parked right next to our motel. The spinach salad was also tasty.
