National Parks Road Trip 2: Calgary to Flathead Lake

On Sunday, we said goodbye to our hosts after another nice breakfast and a walk to the nearby Circle K with the kid for snacks. It was a short visit but a good one, and we were treated very well.

This was our first real road trip day. We headed south through beautiful rolling prairie, pulled a quick u-turn for a red-tailed hawk on a roadside fence post, then eventually turned west into the Rocky Mountain foothills. We stopped to gawk at Frank Slide, where a big chunk of mountain fell off in 1903 and the valley is still covered in heaps of boulders. We ate bagel sandwiches in Fernie while being sung at by a folk band playing a little street festival.

South of the border, we moved back into sprawling ranchlands with big mountains still looming in the distance. L saw a coyote loping through a pasture. Later, we had to pull another u-turn when we spotted an osprey, who screamed and pooped in my general direction as I snapped a few shots from the road.

We found a sweet, comfy, somewhat retro motel called Timbers, walked over for some burgers and fries from a shack on the highway, and took a quick evening walk through the nearby state park to get a look at Flathead Lake before the sun went down.
