Friday was a hilariously smooth travel day - so much so that it felt like the world was impatient for us to get out west. Our cab driver drove like we were being tailed by gun-toting lowlifes, we were bustled through security in no time, we switched to better seats, our flight left early... Even the rental car guy walked out of the booth to meet us with a set of keys. We navigated the wide, winding Calgary roads with ease as red lights turned green in front of us, arriving at my cousin's place in time for a nice snacky dinner and a chat, with Winston the dog demanding endless pets.
On Saturday, my cousin's thirteen-year-old made us delicious fluffy pancakes for breakfast. We headed out on our own for the morning, stopping at a farmer's market for plums, carrots, and cider, a bakery for sandwiches, and MEC for a bear bell. We ate the sandwiches at the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary, where we spotted wood ducks, yellow-rumped warblers, and a western wood-pewee on a distant fence-post. It was a hot, dry day, so we got ice cream from Made by Marcus - the cinnamon snickerdoodle flavour was incredible (possibly even better than Dalla Rose's, which I know sounds insane).
We met up with our hosts at a provincial park for a nice walk, dropping rocks through the hole in a bridge, dodging cyclists, joking around, and sticking to the shade. B spotted a cute gray catbird calling to us from a tree, continuing her creature-spotting streak. That evening, we were treated to a pretty serious dinner at the Nash - the rotisserie chicken was a paradigm changer, B's fried king oyster mushrooms were crispy and savoury, and the Basque goat-cheese cheesecake was just the right level of sweetness.
