It was hard to leave Fogo, but we'd seen every single caribou and hiked up every rocky bluff. We headed back down south to check out the Gander International Airport, whose now-defunct International Departures Lounge is a "Modernist gem".
Almost every trans-Atlantic flight used to make a stopover in Gander, and people still talk about celebrities like Frank Sinatra, Marilyn Monroe, and Fidel Castro grabbing drinks at the bar. (You can read or listen to more about the lounge here.)
Further down the road, we stopped in Terra Nova National Park for an 8 km hike through black spruce forests and peatlands. We didn't see any moose, but we saw plenty of tracks and scat and a cute red squirrel.
There was one crazy stretch of road that climbed above the treeline to a barren landscape that made B feel like we were on the moon. We made it to our airbnb north of St John's last night just in time to watch the Washington Capitals shut out the Tampa Bay Lightning, forcing a seventh game in the series.
