We drove into downtown St John's and parked atop Signal Hill. I'm worried that we're over-using the words "bluff" and "windy" on this trip, but this was one heck of a windy bluff. The peak provided good views of town, and the informational placards about the narrows below were quite informative.
I grabbed a slice at Venice Pizzeria and B got a big bowl of vegetable shoyu ramen from Bad Bones, where the server recognized her Depot hat and told us she was also from NDG!
Three of the city's "four most majestic churches" were closed to the public, and we couldn't find the fourth, but they were nice to look at from the outside. We spent a pleasant hour or two at an art / natural history / cultural museum called The Rooms, then got a scoop at Moo Moo's before heading on to the Commissariat House. Our Provincial Historical Site Annual Passes got us inside handily, where a young lady from Finland told us all about how the British Army purchased goods from locals for their military campaigns in the 1830's.
It's been bizarre to find this entire city out at the frigid and blustery edge of the world, filled with people acting as though this were all totally normal. Seems to be a nice enough place though.
