Vancouver Island 2: Beechey Head

We woke up yesterday in a luxurious airbnb in the wooded hills near Sooke and pretended to be millionaires with a morning soak in the hot tub, which has a view of the Strait of Juan de Fuca and the Olympic Mountains of Washington State. We left late that morning, picked up baked goods and a wrap from a cafe nearby, and met the visiting kinfolk (plus Fozzie the goofball dog) at a trailhead not far from our cabin.

The hike was about 5 or 6 km along the coast in East Sooke Regional Park, with stops to admire views of the bay, point at the weird arbutus trees and Spanish moss, walk on the rocky beaches, eat some lunch, and take a nice group photo. We also found some artisanal ice cream sandwiches at a strategically-located little stand just outside the park entrance.

We relaxed back at the cabin for a while in the afternoon (with a nap and a hockey game, respectively) and then drove back into Victoria to meet up with folks at a fancy farm-to-table restaurant (B says it wasn't that fancy). The dinner included excellent conversation, seafood cannelloni for B, and an historic gnocchi dish with cauliflower, crispy kale, feta, and chimichurri.

  1. The ice cream sandwiches look delicious! I don’t think you would find a gnocchi recipe like that in Italy…just sayin.
