Vancouver Island 1: Victoria

We flew direct from Montreal to Sidney, BC, arriving late and crashing for a few hours in a very welcoming Travelodge. Things got off to an excellent start with one of CLB's favourite things: a breakfast with cereal, muffins, OJ, and the pinnacle of hotel breakfasts, a make-your-own-waffle station.

Wondering whether the day could get any better, we walked down the main street to the ocean — technically the Salish Sea, which is the stretch of water between Vancouver Island and mainland BC. From a long pier, we saw seagulls, cormorants, a seal, and a pair of what we first thought were dolphins slowly swimming right beneath us, but which were probably sea lions. Very cool, either way.

We picked up a rental car and drove south to Victoria. After a tour of Beacon Hill park (featuring the world's tallest freestanding totem pole and some peacocks hanging out at the compost dumping station), we found more rocky beaches to stroll upon and an inviting little cove where B stuck her feet in the water.

On a friend's recommendation, we walked into the touristy part of downtown to get fish 'n' chips from Red Fish Blue Fish, featuring crispy tempura-battered wild salmon. It was as good as it sounds.

We then drove to CLB's cousin's house in Oak Bay, where we spent a wonderful evening catching up with family (three other relatives also ferried in to join us, which was fantastic), walking around in a light drizzle, and eating delicious slow-cooked chicken tacos.
