We're currently in Ucluelet, a little town about a half-hour south of Tofino. We're staying in a guest suite on top of a garage attached to a house at the end of a cul-de-sac. While slightly less luxurious than our last place, it is eminently cozy and within walking distance of two different trails.
Yesterday morning we walked down to the Lighthouse Loop trail. It was cold and foggy, everything was still damp from the night's rain, and bald eagles were drying out their feathers at the tops of trees. We kept running into different groups of pleasant people all speaking the same unknown Scandinavian-sounding language. There were stunning views of the water every few meters; a storm buoy made low bellowing sounds in the choppy waters. It was a pleasantly moody aesthetic.
We stopped for a snack at a quiet little beach where B found a big snail shell and some cool plants, and an old dog named Max almost came up to say hello but got distracted by a sound in the trees.
The sun broke through as we headed home for lunch, so we switched from toques to baseball caps. After a quick bite, we struck out again on foot towards another section of the Wild Pacific Trail to the north. This one faced more open ocean, and the waves crashing against the rocks made huge loud splashes. We were completionists, taking every extra loop and following every dead-end trail to its conclusion, and our legs and feet paid the price — I'm not sure we'll ever walk again.
Also, B made a tasty baked potato dinner using only a microwave. Impressive.
