Vancouver Island 5: Galloping Goose Trail

After 4 action-packed days, we decided to stick around our fancy cabin and relax a bit for CLB's birthday. The morning involved Cap'n Crunch and another instance of lounging in the hot tub. In the early afternoon we walked over to check out the Galloping Goose Trail, a converted railway line that runs 55 km from Victoria all the way past Sooke, passing close by our airbnb.

It was a beautiful, wide, flat path with big trees, boisterous robins, and cute little Pacific wrens skittering around in the undergrowth. On the way back we detoured along a creek to check out some slugs and minnows, and at the last minute we spotted an enormous great horned owl watching us sedately from a huge tree, just a few meters away. We stood in stunned silence for a few minutes, then took a photo before it decided to step off its perch and soar back into the trees.

We also had a very nice fire in the fireplace that evening.

  1. Your photos are simply incredible! Wonderful subjects but your framing of them and capturing the beauty of the moment is extraordinary.

  2. That owl blends so well. It must have been surprising to see him.

    1. It was a shock, especially since we'd been looking right in its direction for a long while before we noticed it!
