Vancouver Island 3: Potholes

We hung around the cabin yesterday morning, soaking in the hot tub, editing some photos, posting to the blog, and eating a nice grilled cheese lunch. In the early afternoon, we drove up past the town of Sooke to Sooke Potholes Provincial Park, where we clambered up and down along the river to ooh and aah at the waterfalls and rapids at the bottom of canyons topped with towering firs.

We also briefly braved some very cold water at a pebble peach downstream (B went in up to her shoulders! and CLB bravely dampened his ankles) where a cute little grey bird was acting like a cormorant, diving into the shallows to catch minnows or water bugs and bringing them back to shore to bonk them mercilessly against a rock before flying away. (Turns out it's called an American Dipper, and it was naturalist John Muir's favourite bird.)

We picked up some groceries on the way back (B finally located a roadside egg depository that actually had eggs), bbq'd some local sausages, watched some hockey, said hello to the deer grazing on the clover out front, and went back in the hot tub.
