[warning: i'm putting this up right after the previous post, so scroll down if you haven't read about charleston yet.]
after a nice day in charleston, we were happy to find a motel. unfortunately, a huge thunderstorm and a broken air conditioner conspired to produce a loud, hot, humid, and mostly sleepless night.
| you are terrible, broken air conditioner. you are the worst. |
we headed out in search of coffee and a beach. on the way, we passed a sign that we had to stop and photograph.
| i can't explain it any more than the photo does. |
we found a great beach south of town. it was a beautiful morning, and the water was perfect swimming temperature. i don't want to go on about this part too much because i know some people reading this will by now already be insane with jealousy, but the whole thing was just excellent.
| she was so excited she ran away. |
we left the beach somewhat reluctantly and made our way Atlanta-wards. that afternoon, we stopped to check out some cotton!
| i told her to go into the plants for this photo |
| cotton: the stuff that jeans are made of |
our last stop before Peach City (probably not Atlanta's actual nickname; i just made it up) was at Congaree National Park. its main feature is a boardwalk through a swamp filled with bald cypress trees and loblolly pines. we saw yellow-bellied slider turtles, a snapping turtle with a huge neck, a whole herd of white-tailed deer, a carolina anole, a blue-tailed skink, two vultures, and all kinds of dragonflies and other bugs.
| the cypresses have "knees" that stick out of the mud around them |
| they called these series of puddles a "gut" |
| more knees and tall trees |
| crazy mushroom; seemed edible but Snap told me not to risk it |
| more weird fungi |
| one of the tallest trees in the state - over 150 feet tall |
| blue-tailed skink! it looked even more impressive in real life |
| vultures! |
we made it to Snap's aunt and uncle's house in atlanta, got a solid night's sleep, and have been having a good, relaxing day. they're already spoiling us rotten. next up: atlanta pics!
oh my goodness I have loved every minute of this blog. You two are the best travellers and the best tellers of the story. And what a story it is! The photos are great - the captions make me laugh out loud. Thank you Snap for not letting him eat that beautiful mushroom. That poor broken down air conditioner looked so guilty. And my very favourite .. the goat who made that impossible climb into the window. Happy and safe travels in the days ahead. xox
